the one i use is non-reference- not only does it have a different number of ports, its also a different sized pcb, so there isnt a hard and fast rule about it.Download Now RADEON HD 6850 1GB GDDR5 DRIVERĪMD Radeon HD 6850 vs Nvidia GeForce GTX 650, Qual a. Off the top the "AMD Radeon HD 6850" is a bad recommendation, and should never have been posted as compatible OOB (out of the box). After more than 8 hours I could have bought 3 cards with the time spent on it. This isn't the worst experience I've had with video cards, but the strangest. It requires careful research before buying, and as you pointed out possibly matching the same model and system settings claimed to work. I appreciate your comments, I don't intend to say it's impossible, or to complain, just to bring to attention this chipset is not a slam dunk install. Both are great cards, better than the several NVIDIA cards I have used. This is my 3rd Sapphire card, I have a 57. That creates a problem if you have to use iMac12,2 for SpeedStepper patch, which I have for my H67ITX. Part of the issues may be it requires an SMBios for MacPro. There are some fixes, all of which I tried, including patching ATI6000Contrller. I know it's not that straight forward but I saw too many reports of inexplicable issues. I tested different Chameleons, ones I know are good and the latest Chimera and others. It will boot with no Graphics Enabler using DVI, and with a basic Device (GFX0) in DSDT and no other injections it will register correctly in "System Information" as "AMD Radeon HD 6850", instead of just "AMD Radeon HD 6xxx". I got it up to 52 fps, but saw minor issues on all attempts to get it working cleanly. Mine was a "SAPPHIRE 100315L Radeon HD 6850 1GB 256-bit GDDR5".

Always chase down hardware that matches as closely as possible to Mac specs, has been reported to work, and at worst require simple steps to enable, or remedy minor issues. So often I see people trying to build a system the hardest way, ending up with something difficult to fix. My mistake, but lucky, mine is being RMA'd because the reseller misrepresented the DVI specs. I assumed a couple guru's I follow had tested the 6850 before recommending it. And don't stop at the first guy that says it's OOB. Choose the card you are interested in and do some success searching in the Hackintosh forums.

To determine if a card has a chance of working with Mac OS, download a copy of GLview. This requires a card with two dual-link DVI and one DisplayPort, and a "Active DisplayPort to DVI Adapter". And can even support 3 monitors by installing Snow Leopard 10.6.7 ATI kext (ATI5000Controller.kext, ATIFramebuffer.kext, ATISupport.kext), and works with Lion 10.7.2, the "ATI Radeon HD 5770" is a much better choice. Support of all ports without issues is not possible.īottom line, if you want a card that supports all ports, DVI, HDMI and DisplayPort, in any combination for 2 monitors. I'm not going to post the many tests I did, because it's a complete waste of effort. I managed to get all kinds of variations working, including a bizzare cable setup where two DVI ports worked and DVD Player did not crash, but there were some video anomalies during boot. That issue has been reported with other cards with different chip sets. This has something to do with one DVI being dual-link and the other being single-link. When the two DVI ports are connected, Apple's DVD Player and Front Row will crash on launch. The worst being multiple ports not working, or causing other issues. Issues with this card are various combinations of functionality limitations. And that only occurs randomly testing different ATIconfig's. Off the top the "AMD Radeon HD 6850" is a bad not the best recommendation, and shouldn't never have been posted as compatible OOB (out of the box).Īside from the fact it is not OOB, it's performance is barely better than a "ATI Radeon HD 5770". I couldn't get it past 52 fps, my 5770 gets up to 51.5 fps. Otherwise in my case the card worked fine with exception that HDMI and DisplayPort may not work at all.įrom a performance standpoint I still think the HD 6850 is no better than HD 5770. As soon as you connect more than one video cable you get that issue. The error messages from apps such as Apple's DVD Player confirm that.

Reading up on the issues and fixes, the problem is mainly port ID's that are mismatched. The card that prompted me to post was the "SAPPHIRE 100315L Radeon HD 6850". I've been lucky with both NVIDIA and AMD, the best so far coming from EVGA and SAPPHIRE. What works 100% on a build may not for another. There are better choices than the AMD HD 6850 cards but it is also rare to find ones that don't require any tweaking at all.
